Grianan of Aileach, County Donegal

He stood upon the outer wall, rough hands leaning softly on stone, mind racing off into the clouds above like a bird. It was only ever here that he imagined to have wings, for it was only ever here, so close to the sky, that he truly tasted freedom.

The car stalled twice as we meandered up the boreen towards the ancient stone fort of Grianan of Aileach, and no wonder, for when we reached her it was as if we had reached the sky.  Sitting above the sloping hills of Inishowen, she commands spectacular views of Lough Swilly and Lough Foyle.  A towering sphere above the plains, she stands like a doorway to the very heavens.
